Then, this afternoon, that all changed. But, there’s a catch.

The University of Kansas Health System will accept coverage for Affordable Care Act patients, but you can’t just log on to the marketplace and choose any insurance provider.

You have to get coverage from Centene – and enroll in their Ambetter plan.

Centene is the first, and right now the ONLY insurer partnering with the University of Kansas Health System through the ACA.

The move comes after it was revealed that starting next year – the ACA would provide no coverage within the metro’s largest health system for people in Wyandotte and Johnson Counties in Kansas, and throughout the entire state of Missouri.

“People who have ongoing relationships with doctors at KU Med Center or are going through a course of treatment at KU - it is very important that they have continuity of care and so it is very good news that all of the parties got together and that KU and insurance companies have reached an agreement for KU to be part of the network,” said Sheldon Weisgrau, the Director of the Health Reform Resource Project.

The University of Kansas Health System says it is currently notifying patients of this change. It will take effect next year.
