Bill Clinton has garnered attention after insisting that he does not owe Monica Lewinsky a personal apology after her life became defined by their affair during the time she was a White House intern, portraying himself as a victim of the mass media.

The former President, speaking in an NBC interview, revealed that he had apologised to everyone and complained that after leaving the presidency, he was financially ruined because of the legal costs associated.

Alongside this, he said that the #MeToo movement is overdue and the Democrat claimed credit for empowering women. In the interview, he also promoted his new thriller book, The President Is Missing, with author James Patterson, but what is Bill Clinton’s net worth?

Hillary Clinton

Hillary Diane Rodham Clinton was born on October 26, 1947 and is the wife of Bill Clinton. Hillary served as the First Lady of the United States from 1993 to 2001. She was also the junior Senator from New York from 2001 to 2009 and the US Secretary of State from 2009 to 2013.

In 2008, she lost the Democratic nomination for US President to Barack Obama and became the nominee in the 2016 election, losing to current President Donald Trump.

She was born in Chicago, Illinois and graduated from Wellesley College in 1969, going on to earn a J.D. from Yale Law School four years later. Hillary married Bill in 1975 after moving to Arkansas and during her time as First Lady, advocated gender equality and healthcare reform.

Chelsea Clinton

Chelsea Victoria Clinton was born on February 27, 1980 in Little Rock, Arkansas and is the only child of Bill and Hillary Clinton. She worked as a correspondent for NBS from 2011 to 2014 and now works for the organisations, the Clinton Foundation and the Clinton Global Initiative.

After attending Stanford University, she attended Oxford and Colombia for Masters degrees. Chelsea married investment banker Marc Mezvinsky in 2010 and the couple have a daughter and a son together.

In an interview with The Guardian, Chelsea spoke about Trump’s planned visit to the UK and said: ‘If I lived in Britain I would show up to protest, because I don’t agree with what he’s doing to degrade what it means to be an American.’

This resulted in a number of media outlets taking her comments out of context, stating that ‘Chelsea Clinton says Trump “degrades what it means to be an American.”’ She was also involved in Roseanne Barr’s Twitter tirade, who claimed that Chelsea was married to investor George Soros’s nephew.

She replied: ‘Good morning Roseanne - my given middle name is Victoria. I imagine George Soros’s nephews are lovely people. I’m just not married to one. I am grateful for the important work @OpenSociety does in the world. Have a great day!’

Roseanne then apologised for her mistake and went on to say that Clinton’s husband ‘is the son of a corrupt senator.’ Edward Mezvinsky was convicted of fraud in 2002 and went on to serve five years in prison.

She then tweeted: ‘Sorry to have tweeted incorrect info about you!I Please forgive me! By the way, George Soros is a nazi who turned in his fellow Jews 2 be murdered in German concentration camps & stole their wealth-were you aware of that? But, we all make mistakes, right Chelsea?’

Monica Lewinsky

Monica Lewinsky was forced into the media spotlight after a sexual relationship between the then 49-year-old President Bill Clinton and herself, a 22-year-old White House intern, came to light in 1998.

The relationship, having taken place between 1995 and 1997, led to charges of perjury and the impeachment of Clinton by the House of Representatives, after Bill ended a televised speech stating that he ‘did not have sexual relations’ with Lewinsky.

Despite being acquitted on all charges during the 21-day trial, he was also held in civil contempt of court because he gave misleading information in the Paula Jones case, regarding Monica and was also fined $90,000.

Monica Lewinsky was a graduate of Portland, Oregon school Lewis & Clark College and was hired during the former President’s first term in 1995 and then worked for the White House Office of Legislative Affairs. She is thought to have confided in her co-worker Linda Tripp about her relations with Bill, who recorded their phone conversation.

In 1998, it became evident that Lewinsky had sworn an affidavit in the Paula Jones case which denied any relationship with Clinton. Tripp then delivered her recording to the Independent Counsel, Kenneth Starr, who was investigating Bill on other matters.

The Clinton-Lewinsky scandal was widely reported and was dubbed as Monicagate and after evidence, a blue dress with Clinton’s semen on it, that Tripp provided, meant that Bill’s statement was false and perjurous.

During the deposition, Clinton was asked whether he had had sexual relations with Monica Lewinsky, to which he replied this time round: ‘I have never had sexual relations with Monica Lewinsky. I thought the definition included any activity by [me], where [I] was the actor and came in contact with those parts of the bodies.’

‘I know that my public comments and my silence about this matter gave a false impression. I misled people, including even my wife, I deeply regret that.

'Indeed I did have a relationship with Ms. Lewinsky that was not appropriate. In fact, it was wrong. It constituted a critical lapse in judgment and a personal failure on my part for which I am solely and completely responsible.’ Clinton has since been accused of sexual harassment and assault by at least four other women.

In May 2018, Bill Clinton addressed this scandal in a NBC interview and said that he does not owe Monica Lewinsky a personal apology, despite her life being defined by their illicit sexual affair and the global scrutiny that followed.

‘No. I do not - I have never talked to her. But I did say publicly on more than one occasion that I was sorry. I apologised to everyone in the world.

‘A lot of the facts have been omitted to make the story work. I think partly because they’re frustrated that they got all these serious allegations against the current occupant of the Oval Office and his voters don’t seem to care.

‘Nobody believes that I got out of that for free. I left the White House $16 million in debt,’ Clinton complained. Two months earlier, Monica Lewinsky penned an essay for Vanity Fair in which she said that ‘what transpired between Bill Clinton and myself was not sexual assault, although we now recognize that it constituted a gross abuse of power.’

‘I’m sorry to say I don’t have a definitive answer yet on the meaning of all of the events that led to the 1998 investigation. I am unpacked and reprocessing what happened to me. Over and over and over again,’ she wrote.

Bill Clinton's impeachment

The impeachment of Bill Clinton was initiated at the end of 1998, on charges of perjury and obstruction of justice, stemming from sexual harassment allegations by former Arkansas state employee Paula Jones. Two other articles, a second perjury charge and an abuse of power charge, failed in the House.

There was sufficient evidence to impeach the former President and all charges were considered by the House of Representatives and Bill became the second president to be impeached after Andrew Johnson in 1868. Richard Nixon had resigned while an impeachment process was underway against him.

However, Clinton was not removed from office due to the trial, which started after the seating of the 106th Congress, in which the Republicans held 55 Senate seats. This meant that 67 senators were required to vote to remove Clinton.

While 50 senators voted to remove the former President on the obstruction of justice charge and 45 to remove him for perjury, no Democrat voted guilty on either and he remained President until the end of his term.

Bill Clinton book

Bill Clinton and renowned author James Patterson have collaborated on a fictional thriller book called The President Is Missing, which riffs on themes such as the civil unrest in Central America, threats against Saudi monarchy and Russian meddling in world affairs.

The plot focuses on the protagonist President Jonathan Duncan and follows him after he ditches his handlers and tries to foil a cyberterror plot alone. In addition to this, there seem to be many messages about the current state of politics embedded within the text.

‘What does it mean to be an American today? It’s a question that will answer itself if we get back to what’s brought us this far: widening the circle of opportunity, deepening the meaning of freedom and strengthening bonds of community.

'Shrinking the definition of them and expanding the definition of us. Leaving no one behind, left out, looked down on,’ the book read.

Another section does the same: ‘Think about how different it would be if we reached beyond our base to represent a broader spectrum of opinions and interests. We’d learn to listen to one another more and defame one another less.’
