Former Interior Secretary Deb Haaland got her first major Democratic competitor Thursday in her race to be New Mexico’s next governor.

Sam Bregman, the district attorney for Bernalillo County, had been rumored for months to be considering a run. He has been the top prosecutor in the county that includes Albuquerque since 2023.

Bregman is positioning himself as a centrist in the race, launching with a video that contrasts him to both Republicans and the “radical left.”
